2016 Training Sessions

PtC 2015 Light Station TngThe Point Cabrillo Light Station State Historic Park offers a variety of volunteer opportunities. You may volunteer in the 1909 Lighthouse, help with Whale Festival (March 5-6 and 19-20), lead tours of the 300-acre State Historic Park, interpret Marine Science, or show off and interpret the history of the First Assistant Light Keeper’s Home.

Whether you are a new or existing volunteer or want to explore new opportunities at Point Cabrillo Light Station, we offer docent training classes each year before Whale Festival.  The 2016 schedule of classes appears below.


First Assistant Lightkeeper’s House History

Saturday, February 6th, 10am to noon. Explore the history, restoration and stories of those that lived and worked at Point Cabrillo.  Meet downstairs at The First Assistant Lightkeeper’s House (East House).  Contact: Ginny Wade at wwade@mcn.org.

Restoration History and Overview of Marine Life Protection Areas

Saturday February 6th, 1 to 2pm. Overview of how the Light Station and Fresnel lens were restored and guest speakers who will give an overview of the Marine Protected Areas. Meet upstairs at The First Assistant Lightkeeper’s House (East House). Contact Tanya.Smart@comcast.net.

Lighthouse History

Saturday February 6th, 2 to 4pm.  Learn more of the history of our working Lighthouse.  New and returning docents encouraged to attend.  Meet upstairs at The First Assistant Lightkeeper’s House (East House). Contact: Kath Disney-Nilson 937-3935 or seakath1@sbcglobal.net.

If you want to attend all trainings on February 6th, bring a sack lunch for the break.

Marine Science Docent Training

Saturday February 13th, 10am to 2pm.  Experience the Marine Science exhibit and learn about the organisms that live in the salt water aquarium with guest speaker Joleen Ossello. Frolic History

Saturday February 13th, 2pm to 4pm.  Connect the history of the Frolic to its impact on Point Cabrillo, Mendocino and California.  Meet upstairs at the First Assistant Lightkeeper’s House (East House).  Contact: Robert Becker 964-9630 or rbecker@cal.net.

Whale Docent Training

Saturday February 27th, 10am to 3pm.  This training will highlight the biology, physiology and current conservation issues surrounding the California Gray Whale as well as interpretive techniques for outdoor naturalists.  Docents and naturalists from other groups are welcome to attend. Lens Tour Training/Refresher

Saturday February 27th, 3pm to 4pm.  Discover how the 3rd Order Fresnel Lens, Federal Aid to Navigation functions today and its history. Be a part of the team that helps with lens tours, a significant source of income for Point Cabrillo. Meet at the Lighthouse. Contact: Steve Nilson.  snilson_mendo@sbcglobal.net. Whale Festival Set Up

Help get Point Cabrillo Light Station ready for the Whales and their Watchers – contact admin@pointcabrillo.org or 707-937-6123 for flexible dates and times.  In 2016, Whale Festival at the Light Station occurs the weekends of March 5-6 and March 19-20.
