Mendocino Bed and Breakfast
The restoration of the historic 1909 Point Cabrillo Light Station and development of the Lighthouse Inn at Point Cabrillo has been the vision of the Point Cabrillo Lightkeepers Association (PCLK) and California State Parks for many years. The newly restored 1909 Head Lightkeepers House (Inn) now provides our guests and visitors with the unusual and magical opportunity to see the Light Station, Lighthouse, and working 3rd Order Fresnel lens at night. A weekend Lightkeepers Interpretative stay includes a private tour of the Lighthouse with the current Lightkeeper.
The 30.5-acre historic Point Cabrillo Light Station is bordered on three sides by a Nature Preserve consisting of 270-acres of undeveloped coastal bluffs, terraces, and prairies. The western boundary of the preserve and Light Station is the beautiful and moody Pacific Ocean. The Light Station and Nature Preserve include 3.5 miles of trails for hiking, bird and wildlife watching, and unparalleled views of the Mendocino headlands and coast.
Properties that were incorporated into the 270-acre Nature Preserve were acquired by the California State Coastal Conservancy (CSCC) 1987 and 1988 to protect these properties from expanding coastal development. The 1909 Light Station was acquired by the CSCC through a land exchange with the U.S. Coast Guard in 1988. The Point Cabrillo lighthouse has a rare, working 3rd Order “British” Fresnel lens. This lens is one of only 12 “British” lenses in the U.S., and became the only working Third Order lens in the U.S. in 1999. The Lighthouse was restored and opened to the public in 2001. In 2002, the Light Station and Nature Preserve were acquired by the California Department of Parks and Recreation, and was renamed the Point Cabrillo Light Station Historic State Park in 2008.
The PCLK, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, holds a management and concession contract for the Light Station, and coordinates day-to-day operations and annual restoration, preservation, and maintenance with the California State Parks. The PCLK invests all net revenues derived from the Inn, retail sales, and public donations into the operations and maintenance of the Station’s historic structures and education programs for children and visitors.
