Redwood Forests near Mendocino
Mendocino Woodlands State Park is located just nine miles west of the village of Mendocino . The park sits at the heart of a redwood forest and its 200 buildings were constructed by unemployed skilled workers of the Federal Works Progress Administration and the Civilian Conservation Corps. The camps have been conserved wherever possible to resemble their original construction in the late 1930's. Structures located throughout the Park are constructed of walls of made from old growth redwood, along with hand-hewn beams and hand-crafted stone fireplaces.
The Mailliard-Redwoods State Reserve was formed to preserve and shelter the coastal redwood forest and associated wildlife habitat in its natural condition. This state park is located along the Garcia River and adjacent watersheds just south of the town of Mendocino .
The breathtaking Smithe Redwoods State Reserve contains the beautiful Frank and Bess Smithe Grove of redwoods. This grove was originally the site of a private resort, the Smithe's donated the land to the state to establish this public reserve. The area's highlight includes a 60-foot waterfall, along with a picnic area and fishing and swimming. This retreat is located just 45 minutes north of the inn near the town of Leggett .
A popular destination for picnickers and hikers, Admiral William Standley State Recreation Area is located north of the Inn near the town of Westport . Featuring towering redwood forests - this recreation area is near the headwaters of the South Fork of the Eel River . Westport is about 30 minutes north of the Inn and the drive up the coast is scenic and relaxing.
